Two Separate Topics Not Related: New Breeds and Megaesophagus
The AKC has recognized several new breeds of dogs lately. The newest breed to join the herding group is the Icelandic Sheepdog. Two other new breeds have joined the working group: Cane Corso and the Leonberger. Switching to another topic I want to mention Megaesophagus in dogs. It is a condition in which the esophagus has become constricted, thus preventing the normal flow of food, liquids and bodily fluids which pass through the mouth and down the pathway to the stomach. Often when it occurs in newborn puppies, they cannot nurse without spitting up and milk coming out their nose. The condition is considered to be hereditary in some breeds. It may be mild with symptoms as small as a cough or regurgitation of small bits of food. Or, it may cause the animal to be unable to eat at all due to dilation of the entire esophagus or restriction of the esophagus.
X-rays are the most accurate way to tell. Aspiration pneumonia is a common complication of this condition...food can get caught in the lungs.
If your dog has megaesophagus and can eat, it is best to serve them soft food in small portions. Elevating the food and water bowl helps also.

Adopt a Greyhound!!
Greyhounds are very laid back and loyal animals. Seven dog tracks halted racing across the country last year. Hundreds of greyhounds have an uncertain future. ADOPT
A GREYHOUND!! Most of these ex race track dogs have spent their lives in kennels with little exposure to families. They adapt really well to their new found life of love and attention. Give a greyhound the love they deserve and they will give the love back tenfold!!
The number of tracks offering races has steadily decreased in the past decade. With the economy forcing many people to give up caring for animals, the need is greater than ever for these dogs. Hope you can help.

AKC Launches new AKC Canine Partners Program for Mixed Breeds
Last month, the American Kennel Club launched its new AKC Canine Partners program.
More than 1200 mixed breeds have enrolled already! More than 365 AKC events have been approved to hold mixed breed classes!
If you own a mixed breed dog you can now enroll in AKC Canine Partners and take advantage of the programs and benefits AKC has to offer, including enrollment in AKC Companion Animal Recovery pet recovery service and a one year subscription to AKC Family Dog Magazine. Keep your dog healthy, happy and safe.

Please Cast Your Vote Californians!
This is from the American Kennel Club and something I think every Californian should be aware of:
California Senate Bill 250 – You May Never Own an Intact Dog Again!
California Senate Bill 250 is before the full Assembly for a vote this week and we need your help. Please contact your state Assemblymember and Senator immediately and ask him/her to oppose SB 250.
The bill will force sterilization of an unlicensed, intact animal if it is impounded (even once!) or violates any one of a variety of animal control ordinances that are not related to an animal's reproductive status. This legislation will not improve the lives of cats and dogs, will negatively impact responsible owners and breeders, and by placing additional burdens on owners of intact animals, may lead to an increase of animals in shelters.
The bill will prohibit an owner who has had an intact dog license revoked from owning any intact dog, so if you have one problem animal you would be banned from ever owning an intact dog again! This is completely unreasonable.
The AKC encourages owners who do not want to engage in responsible breeding programs or compete with their dogs to spay and neuter their animals. We object to forced sterilization of dogs for minor animal control violations. With the confusion of overlapping jurisdictions and a high number of people being forced to move due to foreclosures, it is easy to see how an owner could overlook pet licensure. Instead of encouraging these people to come into compliance, SB 250 penalizes them by requiring sterilization, even for a single offense. By requiring an expensive elective surgery in addition to fines to reclaim their animal, some owners will be forced to make the heart-wrenching decision to abandon a family pet.
Existing state law already requires that owners of intact animals pay a license fee that is at least double that of the fee for sterilized animals and provides for enhanced and graduated fines for owners whose intact dogs are impounded. These statutes are sufficient to incentivize owners to sterilize their animals and to address animal control concerns with specific intact animals who are impounded. If local governments feel the need to adopt further ordinances, it is within their power to do so.
This bill is currently on the Assembly floor and will likely be voted on in the next few days. If it passes the Assembly it will return to the Senate to enable the Senators to vote for or against the changes made in the Assembly. Please contact both your Assemblymember and Senator immediately! Passage of SB 250 will make it much harder to obtain a locally raised purebred dog in California!

Being Resourceful and Giving Back!

Just had to share with you that I found a couple of really neat websites today in regards to pets.
Almost everyone who has loved a pet has lost a pet to old age, sickness or an unfortunate circumstance. It is such a depressing time when we are going through this. Well I discovered a place where you can have a tree planted in honor of your pet. It's the Arbor Day Foundation Trees for Pets. It enables you to honor a special companion in your life with a gift of a tree. You can do it for your own pet or do it for someone elses pet.
